Ice from vehicle smashes windshield, nearly seriously injuring passenger

Danielle Tippett and her three daughters were driving to the mall Saturday in Saginaw County.

That's when something unthinkable – and very unusual – happened.

“Never expected it to happen, you know, it was kind of a freak accident,” Tippett said.

As they drove, Tippett noticed a full-size, red Chevy pickup truck in front of her, covered in snow

“And I noticed the whole sheet of ice on top of his truck projected off of the top... And i had no time to react. It smashed into my car,” Tippett said.

The chunk of ice went right through her windshield, shattering it to pieces as they drove.

A sizable chuck of the glass broke through the windshield on the passenger side, where Tippett’s 14-year-old daughter was sitting.

“The only thing that gave her warning is that I seen it happen, so I screamed and she put her head down and it hit her on top of the head,” Tippett said.

She's doing OK now, but that small move may have made the difference in life and death for her daughter

“It could have been fatal. It could have taken her life. It could have damaged her face if she hadn't put her head down,” Tippett said.

Tippett said she never thought snow and ice sliding off the top of a vehicle could do so much damage.

The windshield has been repaired since the accident. But it was a $300 fix.

And the driver of the truck? He just drove away.

Tippet said police came after the accident and decided not to write up an accident report.

She said they told her the driver probably didn't even know it had happened.

But with the amount of snow and ice Mid-Michigan has seen lately, and the more that will come, Tippett said she hopes people take the small amount of time to brush off their cars.

“From top to bottom, not just your windshields and viewing area. It was a freak accident, and it may never happen again, but it did happen,” Tippett said.
