Gun control supporters, opponents debate executive orders

Pastor Larry Camel led his bible study at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church.

Each week, they pray for an end to violence in their community.

Camel said the president's actions is an answer to some of those prayers.

"When is enough, enough? Let's be proactive, and start to get those guns off the street," Camel said.

Camel said he's seen too many senseless deaths both locally and nationally.

And he thinks mandatory background checks outlined by the president will help keep them out of the hands of criminals.

"The president was appealing to everybody, everybody, to get on this campaign about the gun violence," Camel said.

But not everybody is buying it.

Todd Gould is a proud gun owner.

"It's definitely the camel's nose under the tent, for sure," Gould said.

He said what came down today is just the first step....and thinks the president's gun control master plan is just getting loaded.

"Certainly people are very concerned because it is an infringement upon the second amendment that is very critical to us as far as the constitution is concerned," Gould said.

Glenn Duncan owns Duncan's Outdoor Shop in Bay City.

He doesn't think the president is taking the right approach.

"Working out problems and stuff and finding the answer is what we need to be doing," Duncan said. "My attitude is, if he keeps talking, he's selling more guns."

Dave McCorvin said he carries a gun for protection, but said there are clear problems with current law.

"Get a man just getting out of prison, he can go buy a gun at an auction. So they need some kind of background check on a person buying a gun, I think," McCorvin said.

Duncan was invited to Washington D.C. for a town hall forum on the issue of gun control at George Mason University.
