SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

Future medical professionals were put to the test.

Around 600 high school students were at SVSU on Wednesday, in a competition sponsored by the Health Occupations Students of America.

They were judged in several categories.

A volunteer there can attest to the rigors of the event.

"It was very nerve-wracking, going in front of the judges. I not only had to take and edit my pictures, I had to present them," said Sydney Freeman. "So I got to work on public speaking, for sure, and preparing a presentation. We couldn't have any notes or anything."

A university spokesman says the event is a showcase of medical talent.

"This is our third consecutive year to have this event, and we're really delighted to have these students here, because they are the future of health care occupations here in the Great Lakes Bay Region.

Students came from 25 counties to compete.
