LANSING, MI (WNEM) -

Gov. Rick Snyder met with the mayor of Flint Thursday morning to work out plans for handling the ongoing water crisis.

Snyder sat down with Flint Mayor Karen Weaver to hash out the details of Genesee County’s state of emergency.

The pair talked about ways to fix the water problems in Flint and pledged to work together to build stronger bonds between the city and the state. Both Weaver and Snyder said the meeting was productive.

"This is about solving problems, improving the water situation in Flint," Snyder said.

He went on to apologize for the situation.

"This is a comprehensive approach and we are taking this very seriously," Snyder said.

Part of that comprehensive solution involves a potentially extremely high cost. During a press conference with reporters, Weaver said the cost of repairing Flint's aging infrastructure could be huge.

"We've heard from millions to, up to, $1.5 billion," Weaver said. "We're doing assessments right now."

Weaver and Snyder have agreed to establish an Inner Agency Committee. It will include members appointed by both the mayor and governor. The committee will be tasked with troubleshooting problems as officials look to resolve the water crisis in Flint. Committee members will also coordinate resources and personnel.

"You have to earn trust," Snyder said. "That's why we're showing the steps we're taking to be proactive, to have people on the ground working in collaboration and in partnership with city officials and the people of Flint. We want to work together to earn the trust of the people of Flint."

Snyder declared a state of emergency for Genesee County on Jan. 5. The declaration is in regards of the ongoing water crisis plaguing Flint.

The problems started when Flint switched its water source from Detroit to the Flint River in April 2014. The city switched back to Detroit in October 2015.
