Detroit sees drop in homicides, overall crime in 2015

Posted: Updated:

Officials report that homicides, rapes, robberies and most other crime in Detroit dropped last year.

Statistics released Wednesday to The Associated Press reveal a trend in which violent and property offenses have decreased since 2013.

The 295 criminal homicides committed in 2015 were down by four from the previous year. About 100 fewer rapes were committed last year. Robberies were down by more than 700.

The reduction comes as Detroit continues its fiscal turnaround a year after exiting bankruptcy.

But Mayor Mike Duggan says the "city remains much too violent." He adds that work to cut crime "has only started."

Detroit officials credit the crime reduction to a number of factors, including a crackdown on youth violence, moving more officers from desks to street patrols and improving officer morale.
