Flint-area sheriff goes door to door with water, filters

FLINT, Mich. (AP) -

The local sheriff and people working community service hours have gone door to door in Flint to distribute water filters.

Genesee County Sheriff Robert Pickell and others offered bottled water and filters Thursday while Flint's mayor was meeting in the Capitol with Governor Rick Snyder.

An emergency has been declared in Flint where water drawn from the Flint River leached lead from old plumbing for months. The sheriff says, "We have babies that are getting brain damage."

He says people were enthusiastic to see the filters and water.

In Lansing, the governor pledged additional state assistance for Flint but provided little detail about what additional help and money would be provided.
