Family needs help repairing bad roof

Posted: Updated:

Anytime it rains outside, it rains inside Sharon Stuhler’s home.

“I can't afford a roof, meaning that it rains inside here. Just can't afford the bills,” Stuhler said.

For the Stuhler family getting help isn't easy. Stuhler lives with her husband who has a brain injury. She also takes care of her daughter who is about to graduate from high school.

Stuhler works as a medical assistant, but it's not enough money to fix the roof. She thought she qualified for a block grant program and was in contact with the Saginaw Department of Community and Economic Development.

But her income level was a bit too high.

“I work full time and he has disability. It's hard to make ends meet,” Stuhler said.

The family said they're barely scraping up enough money to get by.

On top of the roof leak, Stuhler received some more bad news.

“My homeowners told me that if I don't get my roof fixed, our policy was going to be canceled,” Stuhler said.

Stuhler has used tarps, duck tape and spray foam to stop the holes in her roof. She said those temporary fixes won’t hold any longer.

While fighting back the tears, she said she hopes something can be done.

“It would be a blessing... A blessing to me and to my family,” Stuhler said.

The Stuhler family looked into other government assistance programs that help low income families, but none of them have panned out.
