Mid-Michigan manufacturing on display at auto show

DETROIT (WNEM) -

Nexteer spokesman Rick Nash is proud to show off his company's products on display at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

"A large cross-section of what you're going to see here today is manufactured in Saginaw, Michigan," Nash said.

Nash said the electric power steering system they produce is in many of the vehicles we drive. He says it makes a difference when it comes to our safety on the road.

"If there is a vehicle detected in your blind spot, you turn on your turn signal, you start to depart into that lane, the vehicle will identify it, it will send you a warning," Nash said. "Or it can actively give you a small resisting torque into your steering system to say hey what a minute, there's something here you need to be concerned. If you have a large crosswind like we've had recently this can basically offer a torque into the steering system learning there's a crosswind and basically offsetting so you're not fighting it at the steering wheel."

Nexteer is also working on steering systems for autonomous driving, said Dawn McDonald.

"Finding what is that driver experience behind the wheel. Whether that may be a wheel or not in the future remains to be seen," McDonald said.

Whether it's the products of today or the products we haven't heard of yet, Nexteer vows to produce them in the Great Lakes Bay Region.

"It's fantastic to have such a manufacturing powerhouse right in the middle of Michigan," Nash said.
