Community fund established to assist in ongoing water crisis

FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

As government officials discuss action, community members have established a fund to help children affected by a city’s water crisis.

The fund, established by the Community Foundation of Greater Flint, is a supplemental resource for state and federal funding.

“If there was ever a time to invest in our children, it is now,” said Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha, Hurley Medical Center physician. “Our Flint children deserve every opportunity to be healthy and successful. The creation of the fund will further ensure that our children are afforded the resources and interventions to overcome this population-wide exposure to lead.”

The fund is designed to support the delivery of critical public health, medical and community-based services to address the short- and long-term impacts of Flint’s water crisis.

Grants from the Fund will be advised by a committee of community members with representation from residents, Hurley Children’s Hospital, Mott Children’s Health Center, Greater Flint Health Coalition, United Way of Genesee County, and the Community Foundation of Greater Flint.
