Couple accused of stealing sex toys after Walmart engagement

BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -

A Bay City couple got engaged at Walmart and then allegedly went on a sex toy shoplifting spree.

William Cornelius Jr., 25, bought his now fiancé, 20-year-old Sheri Moore, a ring for $29.62 from the Bangor Township Walmart on Dec. 30, according to Bay County Undersheriff Troy Cunningham.

After purchasing the ring, Cornelius had a Walmart employee read a proposal over the store’s loud speaker asking Moore to marry him, Cunningham said.

After the public proposal, which was caught on surveillance footage, the couple went across the street to the Bay City Mall.

While they were there the couple allegedly stole sex toys and other miscellaneous items from Spencer’s Gifts, Cunningham said.

Deputies from the Bay County Sheriff’s Department discovered Moore walking outside the mall. She had some items in her possession that were allegedly stolen from Walmart, Cunningham said.

Cornelius was later found asleep in the food court. The stolen Spencer’s items were in his possession, Cunningham said.

The couple was taken into custody.

Moore told deputies Cornelius had stolen the items, Cunningham said, adding Cornelius confessed to stealing the items.

Moore was arraigned Jan. 4 on a misdemeanor count of larceny less than $200. That charge was from an unrelated incident earlier in the year, Cunningham said.

She has not been charged for the Dec. 30 incidents. It is unclear if charges will be pressed against her.

Cornelius was arraigned on Jan. 5 for one count of third-degree retail fraud stemming from the Dec. 30 incidents. He was released on bond.

Cornelius was either on probation of parole at the time of the Dec. 30 incidents, Cunningham said.
