FREELAND, MI (WNEM) -

"Oh it's been rough," said John Vickers.

It's the coldest week of the winter so far, and Vickers and his wife, Doraldyn, are trying to stay warm inside their home after their furnace broke last Friday.

''We called Sears and other people called them too, they said the 16th is the only time they can get out here and that's this Friday," Vickers said.

Vickers said because the furnace is from Sears and he has a warrantee, he needs Sears to fix the furnace.

Now friends and neighbors have stepped up to help the couple, by lending them space heaters until their furnace is fixed.

"The neighbors down the road let us have that one, they're just real nice about everything," Vickers said.

Four space heaters are spread throughout their home along with a fan that’s propped up in front of the oven to help spread heat around.

The Vickers said they're grateful to everyone who's offered them assistance.

"People have really been nice really, really been nice, offered if we needed any help to call them," Vickers said.

For now this couple is counting down the hours until their furnace will finally be fixed.

A representative from Sears reached out to TV5. They said their local office didn’t know the Vickers were completely without heat.

They said they would be contacting the Vickers to arrange service as soon as possible.
