Low gasoline prices fueling luxury pickups

DETROIT (WNEM) -

Many Americans have a love affair for pick-up trucks.

"More than anything, it's certainly that American preference for utilities and trucks that are certainly driving things," said Larry Dixon.

Dixon works for J.D. Power and said these new pick-ups have the blue collar grit with white collar appeal.

And with lower gasoline prices, they're a hot buy.

"I think for the foreseeable future, yeah, I think things look pretty good," Dixon said.

On the floor, the Chevrolet Silverado is one of the first pick-ups you see.

Sandor Piszar is the director of truck marketing for Chevrolet. He said the truck is creating a buzz and it's proudly built in Flint, Michigan.

"We love everyone out there at our Flint assembly plant, they make the finest trucks in the world. We can't build and sell these trucks fast enough," Piszar said.

The heavy duty truck is built for work and can tow upwards of 20,000 pounds.

In the past, getting the job done was its sole purpose. But Chevy officials said it now also has a touch of luxury.

"We've seen that trend, with more fully loaded vehicles, because people want it all, they don't want to compromise. And with this truck, they don't have to do that," Piszar said.

Piszar said assembly is rocking in Flint which is great for the city. And Dixon believes as gas prices stay low, pick-up purchases will be the American way.

"The versatility that trucks offer, you can easily argue are superior to that of cars, and they are jacks of all trades if you will," Dixon said.
