National Guard arrives to assist in water distribution

FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Tracy Hughes likes seeing the presence of the National Guard on duty.

"I think it should have been a little earlier than this," Hughes said.

Late last night, Gov. Rick Snyder decided to deploy National Guard troops in Flint.

Only a small handful of National Guardsmen are currently in Flint. That number is expected to be as high as 30 members by Friday.

"It is what it is, it’s better now than never," Hughes said.

On Wednesday morning, representatives from the National Guard and state police joined Sheriff Robert Pickell in announcing the National Guard’s role.

"They are here to assist us in any way," Pickell said.

According to Lt. Col. William Humes, an increase in National Guard’s presence isn’t expected.

"I would be kind of surprised,” Humes said. “But we would ready and we wouldn't have a problem filling that need."
