Forum set for parents, kids to talk about Detroit schools

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (AP) -

After days of teacher absences, Detroit parents and students are getting a chance to speak publicly about their schools.

The Detroit Parent Network is holding a forum Thursday. The group says it has been "watching in dismay" at the turmoil in the city's public schools, which are burdened by millions in debt, low morale among staff and other problems.

Many schools have been forced to close since last week because of a so-called sick-out by teachers. There about 100 public schools in Detroit and 46,000 students.

Businessman John Rakolta Jr., who co-chaired a group that recommended school reform, says the district could face bankruptcy without action by state lawmakers.
