Community outreach bright spot in water crisis

FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

There appears to be some signs of relief for residents affected by an ongoing water crisis.

Thursday was the second day of the state and National Guard joining other volunteer organizations.

“I think it's important for the community to get us all healthy,” said resident Ebony Cargile.

And that includes the men and women of the Flint Fire Department. Flint fire stations have been turned into distribution centers for water and filters.

But Thursdays, the fire fighters were the one's getting a helping hand.

A group of fire fighters from Detroit came it to the Vehicle City to support their brothers and sisters in uniform providing them with water.

"They're paying for water out of their own pockets and we figured as brothers to them and girls also and that we should be contributing. And that what we are doing," said Robert Knight, a Detroit firefighter.

The community outreach didn’t end there. The UAW Local 1285 made a water donation at the Flint Food Bank.

"We've been at this since September, bringing water to the food bank and then distributing it into the community," said UAW Region 1D Director Gerald Kariem.

With all the water donations, Cargile said the most valuable giveaway is the water testing kits.

“I think the most important part of getting your water tested because you know don't know,” Cargile said. “I had my sons lead tested probably about a couple of months ago and they said it was normal but you still want to get so you have your own documentation, you know where you stand where your health stands because nobody knows.”
