Father, son displaced by New Year's fire receive community support

In this game of bingo, Ernie Galan III and his son Ernie struggled to get that elusive fifth spot on the board.

And that board? It's one of many Christmas presents little Ernie just opened after a fire destroyed his others weeks ago.

"The response has just been overwhelming since all this happened, everybody's made recovery really easy, it's been really great," Galan said.

Galan reached out to TV5 after a New Year's Day fire destroyed everything in their home, including little Ernie's vital medical supplies.

Action was swift, though. Community members have raised more than 3,500 dollars and organizer Deanna Prieur said the Galan's new home is filled with everything they'll need – and then some.

"We have gotten pillows, food, lots of clothes, boots," Prieur said.

So even though the father and son struggled to get a “bingo," thanks to the community, that's one of the few struggles they now face.

"We're truly happy," Galan said.
