Firefighters practice ice rescues

BANGOR TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -

Firefighters brushed up on some seasonal skills in a training exercise.

Firefighters in Bay County's Bangor Township took a cold dip into the Saginaw River to practice ice rescues, something they prefer to do when the ice is a little thicker.

"We have quite a bit of ice right now. It's still not real safe ice, but we can't walk out and just fall through. We gotta kinda jump up and down to fall through," said George Strieter, Bangor Township firefighter.

Strieter said to stay off the ice right now to avoid becoming a rescue victim yourself.
