Teacher who pleaded no contest to sex crime gets jail

Posted: Updated:

A former teacher and wrestling coach in western Michigan has been ordered to 30 days in jail after pleading no contest to a charge of criminal sexual conduct against a student.

The Holland Sentinel and The Grand Rapids Press report Matthew Powell was sentenced Monday. Authorities accused him last March of kissing and groping a 16-year-old student of Holland's West Ottawa High School.

The plea isn't an admission of guilt but is treated that way for sentencing.

He also receives two years of probation and must register as a sex offender for 25 years.

Defense attorney Fil Iorio says sought no jail for Powell, adding his client is "a good and decent person" who "lost the career he loved."

Judge Jon Hulsing says Powell "abused" his position of authority.
