Volunteers needed outside of water distribution

FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Kara Ross is vice president of the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan.

"It's imperative that we have volunteers that come in and help us get the food sorted," Ross said.

Ross said there's plenty of water here and she welcomes all of it. Clean water in high demand as Flint deals with its water crisis. But Ross said she needs volunteers too.

"As little as two hours, four hours, come on down," Ross said.

That's because many volunteers who help out at the food bank are now distributing water. Garland Hill has been at a fire station handing out bottled water since Sunday.

"It feels real good you know I'm happy to be here," Hill said.

Hill said he’s happy to help residents like Jacobi Duncan, who came by to receive some water.

"It's not good that we have to get the water, but, you know, it’s good they're trying to do something to help us out," Duncan said.

Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz sent volunteers to help too. Wendy Day is the state director for the campaign.

"He's taken a leadership stance on this. And acknowledged the failure of government at every level," Day said. "And you know the reality is if you don't want government to be the answer then we have to step in and be the answer."

Day's group dropped off water at the Answer Center for Women. Holly Tyler is the director of the center.

"We got a lot of pregnant women with small babies that come in and they get with their formula and water," Tyler said.

No doubt, in times like these volunteers are everywhere. Ross just wants to see a few more coming through her door.

"We really need to hold those numbers even while this water emergency is going on here in Flint. And also make sure all these families have food to eat," Ross said.
