Mayor given authority after transitional vote

FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

A transitional board has returned authority to a city's mayor.

Flint began its transition back to local control in April 2015 after former emergency manager Jerry Ambrose's recommendation.

On Friday, the Receivership Transition Advisory Board's special meeting voted unanimously to transition authority back to the mayor.

Mayor Karen Weaver listened to the meeting via telephone.

"It's another really good day for helping to bring Flint back," Weaver said. "I want to thank everybody for making it happen, the governor and his staff, my transition team and the local and national media for helping us get our story out.  While I recognize we have a lot of work to do, this is a step in the right direction."

After the unanimous vote, the decision to approve these changes were left to the state treasurer.

Shortly before 4:30 p.m. on Friday, State Treasurer Nick Khouri signed off on the changes.

What this means is, effective immediately, the mayor has the authority to appoint the city administrator and all department heads, including the police and fire chiefs. The city administrator will now serve as the city's chief administrative officer, back in line with the city's charter.
