7-year-old dies after getting struck by vehicle

BAY COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A 7-year-old girl is dead after she was struck by a vehicle over the weekend.

It happened Jan. 22 shortly before 8 p.m. on Westside Saginaw Road near Ziegler Road in Bay County.

John Schmidt, 61, of Kawkawlin, was traveling southbound on Westside Saginaw Road when Abigail Schaefer ran into the path of the vehicle, police said.

The 7-year-old from Auburn was transported to Covenant Hospital in Saginaw. She passed away on Jan. 24 from her injuries.

Abigail was former WNEM-TV5 reporter Randy Wimbley's wife's niece.

"We was holding her brother's hand and that's when, for whatever reason, you know she's a child, a kid, and kind of took off," Wimbley said. "And it happened so quick they couldn't grab her."

Abigail was a spectator at a sporting event at St. Paul Lutheran School, 6094 Westside Saginaw Road, at the time of the accident.

Wimbley said the family is trying to come to grips with the tragedy.

"They saw everything happen, so you can imagine how hard it is for them," Wimbley said. "For the parents, and also for her brothers. A 9-year-old and a 5-year-old who saw this happen. So just imagine how difficult it is for them to process what happened to their sister."

Wimbley said his family is grateful for all the prayers and support from the community.

"Don't stop praying for us," Wimbley said. "If you're a person of prayer, please keep praying for this family. We really do appreciate it."

Wimbley said the family is praying for the driver involved. Authorities said the incident was an accident.

Wimbley said life will never be the same for him or his family.

"All the time she would said, because I always used to rough house with the kids, 'Chase me Uncle Randy! Chase me Uncle Randy!'" Wimbley said. "So that's just something that's stuck in my head."

There will be prayer services at the school's chapel and in individual classrooms for Abigail.

Abigail did not go to school at St. Paul. She attended Trinity Lutheran School in Bay City.

A dinner and silent auction will be held on Sunday, Jan. 31 from 11:30-3 p.m. for Abigail's family. If you have any additional questions or would like to donate, please email Heidi Schultz at heidiannschultz@aol.com.
