Looking to recycle donated water bottles, used filters?

Posted: Updated:

Millions of water bottles have been donated to Flint. But many organizations are concerned about those water bottles ending up in landfills.

Sacred Elements, an alternative and holistic health shop in Flint, is offering to recycle water bottles brought to their store.

“We have a great and inexpensive design of greenhouse that is constructed of 1x framing and water bottle walls,” Sacred Elements said on their Facebook page.

Sacred Elements isn’t the only local organization chipping in. Mission Protect Flint Recycling Project was started by residents to make recycling easier.

Mission Protect Flint is providing bags and picking them up on Monday. The organization also has a drop off option at Roy Wilkins Elementary School on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to noon.

"It's going to be a big issue soon in Flint because we've got millions of bottles of water coming in, daily right now. And you've got bottles just flying around the neighborhoods," said organizer Janay Young.

There are also curbside options for recycling.

The Flint Sanitation Department offers bi-monthly recycling pick-up. Resident just have to call and set it up with the department at 800-858-0089.

Flint has contracted services with Republic Services for trash collection, yard waste and recycling. Residents can opt into the recycling services by going to their website and providing their address.

Three of the fire stations (Fire Stations 1, 5 and 8) acting as water distribution centers are also recycling water bottles through Schupan Recycling. All five water distribution sites are offering recycling for PUR and Brita cartridges.
