City moves to LED lights

SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

Crews are making their way down Saginaw Road, changing out streetlights for new energy efficient LEDs.

"It’s a good thing the light is much more efficient," said Michael Hagen.

Hagen is the traffic foreman for the city. He said the project has been years in the making.

"As the price of led lighting came down it became more practical to try to do the conversion," Hagen said.

The $1.8 million project is being paid for through bond money.

But Hagen said the conversion will start to pay off quickly, the city expects to pay just a third on of what it's spending now on street lighting.

"Currently our electric bill for the lighting is approximately $650,000 this should reduce it by about $440,000 a year," Hagen said.

Hagen also said the LED lights will also make the streets much brighter at night for residents.

"I think that the neighborhoods will all notice a difference in how well they can see at night," Hagen said.
