Michigan instituting Blue Alert

Posted: Updated:
LANSING, MI (WNEM) -

Michigan is about to sound the alarm on people who kill or injure police officers.

It's instituting the Blue Alert.

It works like the Amber Alert for children and the Silver Alert for seniors.

The Blue Alert will be blasted out to media outlets and cell phones.

The message will say where the incident happened, a description of the suspect or suspects and the kind of vehicle they may be in.

"If anyone is willing to kill an officer, it makes that person much more dangerous in the public," said Sen. Tonya Schuitmaker. "Seconds count and having more eyes and ears on the ground to capture that dangerous suspect is very important."

The Blue Alert Law takes effect on Monday.
