Crashed Tahoe leads investigators to storage unit thefts

SANILAC COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Deputies are asking for your help investigating a series of storage unit thefts.

Between the evening hours of Jan. 21 and early hours of Jan. 22, several units at Marlette Mini Storage, located at 1995 Vandyke Road in Sanilac County’s Marlette Township, were broken into.

Deputies first became aware of the theft after property owners discovered a Chevrolet Tahoe running in a fence row near Stilson and Isles Roads in Flynn Township.

Someone had placed a piece of plastic between the seat and accelerator, and the vehicle drove itself into the fence row and became stuck. It continued to run until the property owners discovered it at around 10:46 a.m. on Jan. 22.

Investigators tracked the vehicle back to Marlette Mini Storage where it was supposed to be stored, and found that locks on five units and been cut, and items were missing.
