The Free Amir website has put together a video full of pictures from Amir Hekmati’s release.

In 2011 Amir went to Iran to visit his family. During the trip he was taken into custody and imprisoned, accused of being a spy.

In January 2012 Amir was sentenced to death. That sentence was overturned in March 2012 and a new trial was ordered. He was tried in December 2013 where he was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

On January 16, 2016, after serving 4 1/2 years, he was released.

It was the longest an American has been imprisoned in Iran.

Upon his release, Amir first flew to Switzerland, then onto Germany. In Germany he was reunited with his family. Days later, he returned home to Flint, MI.
