Mid-Michigan man, Nat Geo star uses celebrity to help animals

For years, Dr. Jan Pol was just a normal veterinarian in rural Isabella County.

"What we actually do is put the large animal, the farm animals, the farmer back in the American living room in a good light," Pol said.

But today, he is known around the world as "The Incredible Dr. Pol" a show which airs on Nat Geo Wild.

Pol's been in the vet business for 40 years and has thousands of clients. He said he never thought he'd be a TV star.

"It has taken off. And right now this show is in more than 20 countries," Pol said. "We're getting calls from all over the United States, Canada, South America. We just got a call the other day out of Romania in Eastern Europe."

One of the show's producers explained how Pol's rise to fame started. Jon Schroder is an executive producer and co-founder of the Incredible Dr. Pol.

He said it all began when he met Pol six years ago. He gathered some footage and sent it out, hoping for someone to bite.

"We shot the reel to several different networks and low and behold Nat Geo Wild picked us up," Schroder said.

Now, every weekend, Dr. Pol is seen in homes throughout the world. Schroder said he knew he found a winner in the reality TV business.

"Dr. Pol and the Pol family are just so genuine. On the television screen what you see on the screen is exactly what you get and that really resonates with people," Schroder said.

Pol said he wants to use his celebrity status to help animals and the people who take care of them.

"What I want to see is affordable, common sense pet care," Pol said.
