Warmer winter temperatures make thin ice

BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -

Some good advice from fisherman Paul Michael as droves of anglers venture out onto the thin ice.

"Know what you're doing, cause if you don't you're going to get hurt," Michael said.

It's been a slow start to the season.

"Not enough ice, not enough snow. Not good!" Michael said.

And because of milder temperatures this winter, many open spots remain.

Many people were out on Friday afternoon near Independence Bridge ice fishing. Authorities are warning to be careful near bridges where open water could be a danger.

The fishermen said they know the dangers, and they're taking extra precautions just in case.

"I wore a life jacket just in case," Michael said.

Michael's advice: peruse the weekly publication by state officials that advises the safe spots and warns of other locations where you could end up underwater.

"I read the fishing report all the time, stay away from the bridges. You gotta watch that stuff because it's dangerous out here," Michael said.
