Men become friends after emergency

MIDLAND, MI (WNEM) -

As Bob Lofiego walked back to take his seat during a performance at Midland Center for the Arts, he fell to the ground.

“And I said to her, my, Laura, I feel light-headed, and that's the last thing I knew,” Lofiego said. “I just dropped right there.”

He was going into cardiac arrest.

He had no pulse.

“I got a radio call that said I was needed at the top of the theatre immediately,” said Tony Serra.

House manager Serra ran to Lofiego's side, and right away started CPR.

And he got the AED and he zapped me and brought me back.

Serra brought Lofiego back to life, after being dead for seconds. Seconds, that felt like days.

“If it weren't for Tony, I wouldn't be here,” Lofiego said.

It was this incident that changed so much for both Lofiego and Serra.

Now, a year later, Lofiego and Serra have become great friends, and they've seen many more shows together at the theatre.

“At this point, Bob is like my third grandpa,” Serra said.

Lofiego said, “I think of him a lot. We didn't even know each other before that. And now, he's a part of my life and I'm very thankful.”

Now, Serra knows exactly where Lofiego and his wife are at every show, which they come to often.

Serra, who was trained in CPR prior to this event, has emphasized safety and life-saving training for all of his staff.

“I was one of those types of folks that, it would never happen to me, I’ll never need this training,” Serra said. “And then you use it. And realize that you can't take that training for granted.”

Lofiego now has a new pacemaker, a new lease of life, and a new friend to spend the rest of it with.

“It seems like I'm thankful every day that I wake up and I'm here,” Lofiego said.
