Caucus reporting gets digital help

DES MOINES, Iowa -

Caucuses are getting a digital upgrade with Microsoft.

In 2012, an error in the vote provided a win to Mitt Romney instead of the real winner, Rick Santorum.

Microsoft developed a smartphone app (for Android, Apple and Microsoft platforms) to help avoid those errors in 2016.

“Under the new system, each Iowa political party will have their own app available on all mobile and PC platforms, which will support the party’s unique caucus voting process. The reporting apps may be used in every precinct in Iowa by both parties,” said vice president of technology and civic engagement, Dan'l Lewin.

Microsoft put out a Youtube video in an effort to explain the app.

The app also helps disseminate information to media outlets faster.

The Democratic Iowa Caucus and the Republican Iowa Caucus each have websites for reported results.
