Woman pleads guilty in northern Michigan animal neglect case

ALPENA, MI (AP) -

A woman has pleaded guilty in an animal neglect case that involved more than 100 animals confiscated from a farm in Michigan's northern Lower Peninsula.

The Alpena News reports Deborah Lewandowski admitted mistreatment of the animals at her farm in Alpena County's Green Township and lost a recent forfeiture hearing that cleared the way for the animals to be adopted. Sentencing is scheduled March 21.

Witnesses earlier testified the animals were living in poor conditions, with hooves on several horses overgrown. Among the animals were two dozen cocker spaniels and the dogs had what were described as severe flea infestations. Surviving animals have been placed in new homes.

A veterinarian has said two horses, a dog and a donkey needed to be euthanized because of their poor health.
