As corroded pipes continue to leach lead into the Flint water supply, the EPA is offering advice on improving water quality. One piece of advice includes plumbing maintenance.

Remer Plumbing & Heating Vice President David Remer is a licensed master plumber. He said some of the cleaning can be done with a common food item.

"And this is just bought in any grocery store, and it doesn't have to be anything special," Remer said.

Remer said vinegar can be used to clean aerators, the piece found on the tip of most faucets. Simply unscrew it and dip it in warm vinegar. The EPA said do this at least once a week.

Vinegar can also be used to clean the water heater, but Remer warns: it's not as easy.

"When people realize the potential things that can happen, if you make the wrong step, I believe this job should be left to a professional to do it," Remer said.

So, what are the indicators that sediment is clogging your plumbing?

"A sure sign of sediment buildup in your heater is when you hear the water heater start to rumble," Remer said. "Faucet aerators, you're going to find that the water flow is going to be restricted."

And if you're using water filters, the EPA wants you to regularly flush the device and change cartridges.
