Co-workers recount working with Earley

DETROIT (WNEM) -

Darnell Earley is a hard guy to get ahold of these days. The former Flint emergency manager won't answer our tough questions about the Flint water crisis.

But we're not alone.

Earley is refusing to testify before Congress during a hearing on Wednesday. People who worked with him said they expect to see him ducking questions.

Ivy Bailey is interim president for the Detroit Federation of Teachers.

"We had a meeting. Mr. Earley came and got upset when the pressure was on him. He got up and left," Bailey said.

She worked with Earley during his time as emergency manager for Detroit Public Schools.

"It's his way. He controlled everything. And you either go with the flow or get out of the way," Bailey said.

David Davenport is a former board member for Flint schools.

"Darnell Earley has an attitude of he's king, he's god, he's almighty and he talks to you like you're dirt," Davenport said.

Davenport said his interactions with Earley were difficult.

"Even though you're appointed and can't be removed. You still have to respect the public and the people of the public and he couldn't do that," Davenport said.

Earley also worked as emergency manager in Flint and city manager in Saginaw.

Scott Kincaid was on the Flint city council during Earley's time as emergency manager.

When TV5 asked him about Earley he said if you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all.

"I dealt with him when I was council president. And I just couldn't repeat what I would say to him. I'm just going to keep those comments to myself," Kincaid said.

Bailey said she doubts if Earley will ever testify in front of Congress.

"It doesn't surprise me that he's arrogant enough to say no, I'm not going to testify in front of Congress. To him, who's Congress?" Bailey said.
