FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

After a soft opening in December, The Local Grocer is celebrating its grand opening.

"It's nice to see local suppliers supplying things that you normally don't find anywhere else," said customer Derek Williams.

The grocery store is located in downtown Flint at Martin Luther King and University Avenues.

"Today was our ribbon cutting with the Chamber of Commerce. Then, on Saturday is our store warming party, where we're going to have our DJ and lots of our companies coming to sample our product," said co-owner Erin Claudell.

Claudell and Franklin Pleasant said they grow much of the organic produce on their own farm, and customers are noticing.

"The food that they make fresh is super delicious; and then, i live in the neighborhood. So, we can walk here," said customer Liz Kish.

Kish lives nearby. She said she enjoys the variety on the menu.

"I've had a couple of their sandwiches and a lot of different kinds of soup; and it's always so good," Kish said.

The store offers free books and pamphlets on healthy living, including how to protect yourself against lead.

"We do have the lead and nutrition pamphlet that you can pick up for your family, which has a lot of good information about and recipes," Claudell said.

Customers said the fresh produce, farm to table kitchen and educational resources are enough to keep them returning.

"Been coming here for a while," Kish said.
