LANSING, MI (WNEM) -

An employee within the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality has been terminated in connection to the Flint water crisis.

Two MDEQ employees were suspended during an internal investigation into the department.

The employee has been identified as Liane Shekter Smith. She was the chief of drinking water and municipal assistance.

"Putting the well-bring of Michiganders first needs to be the top priority for all state employees. Anything less than that is unacceptable. The DEQ is working to change and ensure mistakes that endanger our residents don't occur again."

The investigation into the second employee suspended by the department is ongoing.
