Trash services working to get residents to recycle

FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

There is growing concern of a new crisis taking over the city of Flint.

In a short-term solution, millions of bottles of water have been donated. But many are concerned about those discarded bottles.

"Recycle, renew, refresh," said Honey Dalune.

Dalune, a Flint resident, said recycling is important, which is why she stopped by Republic Services’ event to get her free recycling bin.

"Obviously, there's millions and millions of plastic water bottles coming into the city. We'd like to keep those out of the landfill and see those be reused," said Gary Hicks.

Hick, trash hauler's municipal services manager said with the help of students from Michigan State, they'll be signing up hundreds of people today and in the days to come.

The goal is to get through the ongoing water crisis without creating another kind of disaster.

"We take some simple information, it only takes a couple of minutes, and then within 48 hours, you'll have a bin at your door," Hicks said.
