Dealerships hire people to keep up with record car recalls

Posted: Updated:

As automakers continue to issue more and more recalls, local car dealerships have their hands full working to make repairs.

Jim Palshan is the service manager at McDonald GMC Cadillac in Saginaw Township.

"Lot of phone calls, a lot of adding extra people just to keep up with that part of the business," Palshan said.

He said recalls in 2014, including the GM ignition switch issue lead his business to hire more people to keep up with all the fixes.

And they've kept the same amount of workers ever since.

“There’s constant especially with technology, there's technology updates on the vehicles that need to be done that are more updates but they're considered recalls," Palshan said.

2014 and 2015 were record years for car recalls quality experts say auto makers are being more proactive to get issues fixed than they were a few years ago.

“They're very proactive in the past it's been a year or two into the vehicle then you'd see more recalls but now is pretty quick,” Palshan said.

Palshan said whenever drivers come in for maintenance, they also double check to make sure there isn't a recall on their car.

"Some people buy they're vehicle used and they may not be on the mailing list and we're able to see that and then capture that and get those done," Palshan said.
