Raw sewage in basement 'just one tragedy after another'

FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Frustrations continue to mount for Julisa Buyck.

"It's just one tragedy after another," Buyck said.

The most recent? Her basement is full of raw sewage.

Buyck's grandson, Christian Green, had most of his toys and lots of other things were ruined by the mess.

"My clothes down there," Christian said.

Buyck said, "Easily thousands of dollars, easily."

Buyck said the problem started on Wednesday, when the sludge started seeping into her place, and five others.

She said the apartment complex acted quickly and hired a private sewer cleaning company to try to get it fixed.

But it wasn't long until that company determined it was the massive water main break just down the road that caused the back-up.

"It's backing up into the sewers, the sewers backed up, and the water is just sitting there," Buyck said.

Buyck said the apartment complex came in and set up equipment to pump the sewage out of the townhomes.

Buyck is pointing the finger at Flint's water and sewer department, the same one at the epicenter of a much larger crisis.

"When I found out it was another city issue, I was just outraged, this is ridiculous," Buyck said.

Buyck said she called them and they told her they'd be out to take a look at it. But so far, they've been a no-show.

"And it's basically nothing nobody can do until the city does their part," Buyck said.

She plans to take her family and stay elsewhere until the mess is cleaned up.

"I'm getting a little militant, to be honest, is where I'm at with it,” Buyck said. “Something has to be done, and has to be done quick, you understand? It's like what do you, you just keep talking, you just keep complaining."
