GRATIOT COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Chris Gautz is spokesman for the Michigan Department of Corrections.

"We're pleased with the governor's budget recommendation," Gautz said.

Gov. Rick Snyder's budget, if passed, would give $8.5 million to train 350 additional corrections officers.

He also wants to spend $981,000 to buy new ballistic vests for probation and parole agents.

"We already have into our baseline budget enough to hire another 350, so really with the one time funding that the governor is proposing, we could hire 700 new officers," Gautz said.

Gautz said his department is losing 60 officers every month, mostly because of retirements.

Gautz said the governor's plan is needed to keep their numbers strong in a dangerous place.

"We operate 24/7, 365 days a year. We don't close our prison on the weekends," Gautz said. "We don't close it on holidays. We have people there all day long all night long. And we have to have people there."
