Blood testing event helps alleviate stress for parents, guardians

Gloria Jones is a grandmother living in Flint and she is surround by fear of the unknown.

"I wanted to make sure they didn't have any lead in their system," Jones said.

Jones and her grandchildren took advantage of this free lead screening done at the YWCA sponsored by Molina Healthcare.

Staff from Molina said they recognize the apprehension the little ones have about drawing blood, but stress the importance of more families bringing in their children for testing.

"That comes by way of communicating not only the children but to the parents to how important it is to learn about lead exposure and to mitigate these effects," said Heidi McGlinnen, Molina Healthcare.

The testing event is a marriage of knowledge and fun.

"We want them to have some fun and get away from that waiting room feel some might have," McGlinnen said.

The atmosphere is intentionally delightful for any child or adult.

The event had activities, treats and information, including free filters and water. Jones said the education was the most important takeaway.

"If they do I’ll know what to do to take care of it, what to look for," Jones said.

The next lead testing event is Feb. 17, at Cathedral of Faith COGIC from 4-7 p.m.
