Post office replaces tattered flag

Posted: Updated:

The American flag is a symbol of respect and honor for the country.

But what if a flag flying above a business or home isn't exactly in the best shape? Tattered, or torn?

TV5 noticed a flag, flying at the post office in Saginaw on Washington Avenue, is in a state of disrepair.

From far away, the flag looks fine, but we got closer, the edges are quite fringed.

“When I see a tattered flag it just lowers the whole morale of things,” said Zachary Jhar.

Jhar is upset with the state of the flag, especially on a government building.

“Well it's a government agency and I'm not sure who's running the show over there, but it needs to be taken attention to so we can honor our vets accordingly,” Jhar said.

He said his family has fought for our country, and it is a sign of disrespect.

“A lot of people are fighting and dying for that flag as we speak so if we could take attention to that, it would be a great thing,” Jhar said.

A spokesperson in Lansing for the post office said she'd have someone from this branch replace the flag right away. It was ordered the same day we spoke to the spokesperson.

But this flag is not the only one in this shape, many others look like this when you start to take notice.

Not many people may know the proper way to care for an American flag. According to the United States flag code, some of those things include:

  • Not flying a flag with the stars, or union, pointed downward.
  • The flag should be fastened in a way so it's not torn or damaged.
  • Flags should be cleaned and mended, and not hung during rain or violent weather.
  • And if a flag is beyond repair, it should be destroyed in a dignified manner.

“I know it's a small thing, but hey, it's something and it means a lot,” Jhar said.

A brand new flag was flying on Thursday morning.
