Students learn about education careers

Posted: Updated:

Students had a chance to learn more about a career in education on Wednesday.

Saginaw Valley State University's college of education hosted the Heart of Teaching panel discussion.

It featured alumni currently working as teachers.

They shared their experience with those looking to follow in their footsteps.

“Looking back there are things I wish I would have known then that I know now and that some of the other teachers shared today,” said special education teacher, Carrie Spengler. “And to have that knowledge or to have that option of seeing what we do and what are thoughts are on those areas is important for teachers to see that are considering going into the field.”

The panel also included administrators discussing what interviewers are looking for in future teaching hires.

Work in the field is expected to grow.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts more than 700,000 new jobs in education through 2024.
