BAY COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Bay County Sheriff John Miller has announced he’ll retire in December when his term is up.

Miller, 64, was first elected to the position in 1996, and has been an employee of the sheriff’s department for 42 years.

“Serving the people of Bay County as their sheriff for the last five terms has been fulfilling and the highlight of my career in law enforcement,” Miller said.

Miller said he came to the decision after talking to his family.

In the remaining months of his term, Miller says he plans to continue increasing the department’s education and prevention programs for heroin abuse.
