LANSING, MI (WNEM) -

Gail Henix brought a family member to the gun range in Saginaw County.

"You have to learn how to handle these guns," Henix said.

All part of learning how to use a firearm.

"Training is really important because some people don't really know how to use them," Henix said.

The need for training might be a thing of the past if some lawmakers in Lansing have their way.

People who pass their background checks to obtain a concealed pistol license would be able to carry a gun without obtaining a permit.

That means they can carry without any CPL classes.

Phil Sheridan owns Sheridan Arms. He said the CPL classes he teaches are essential to gun safety.

"We experience people every day in our training program that come through that door – 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 percent do not know what they're doing with a firearm," Sheridan said.

Owners learn how to shoot, get info on gun laws and personal protection. Items that Sheridan wants to see stay in place.

"Another thing that we see with our people is that they don't know how to shoot a gun and shoot a gun safely," Sheridan said.

Leland Teschendorf is the Tuscola County Sheriff.

"Allowing people to carry a concealed pistol without any training or education is a very bad idea. I think it it's going to lead to a lot of serious problems," Teschendorf said.

Teschendorf agrees with Sheridan, he said he’s worried about what will happen if gun owners don't have training.

"It's going to lead to some tragic incidents when they aren't made aware of what their own legal requirements are," Teschendorf said.

Sheridan said, "That's going to result in accidents and liability and other issues that would be detrimental."

Henix said she too hopes the bill doesn't become law.

"Know and learn how to use these guns because that is important," Henix said.
