SWARTZ CREEK, MI (WNEM) -

A single mom shared a warm cup of coffee with her daughter.

The home belongs to Tammy Werda. Her husband, Michigan State Trooper Jeff Werda, was killed in a crash after joining a pursuit.

"It doesn't really matter how many years are gone because they're supposed to be with you," Tammy Werda said, crying.

Five years have passed since Tammy Werda has seen her husband's smile – a smile she misses most of all.

"His laugh... his smile... he was always so happy," Tammy Werda said.

Jeff Werda was killed in April 2011. He was driving at a high speed through Birch Run Township when he lost control of his vehicle, crashing it and killing him.

"There was a chase and he was going to back up another department in the chase," Tammy Werda said.

Tammy Werda said it was always like Jeff to help out. After the accident, strangers approached Tammy Werda telling her the kind things Jeff did for them.

"It's nice to hear the people appreciated him as much as you did," Tammy Werda said.

Tammy Werda said people need to appreciate law enforcement, as the majority are good people like Jeff.

She's keeping Jeff's giving spirit alive by starting a memorial fund and giving scholarships to families affected the same way.

"We're all family, it doesn't matter what department you work for, or if you’re a firefighter or EMS, we're all helping each other," Tammy Werda said.

She said she believes Jeff is still around helping her.

Every time the wind blows she knows Jeff is close by.

"[The wind chimes] seem to always go off when we're doing something for him or talking about him. Even my mom has a set that we got, she was sitting on her porch,” Tammy Werda said. “Thinking about him and there was no wind at all and they just started chiming."
