BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -

Gena Amos was the attorney for Leroi Kocsis, the man who shot a police officer Friday and set off a 22-hour standoff with police.

"I am so sorry. I don't condone the fact that he shot at that officer, I don't condone any of that but I just feel like this was so unnecessary," Amos said, crying.

It ended after Kocsis was found dead by police of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Now outside the home a memorial is growing in remembrance of Kocsis.

“I'm just so devastated by this whole situation,” Amos said.

Police said the whole situation began when four undercover officers had tried to serve Kocsis a warrant for violating conditions of a bond for a criminal sexual conduct charge.

Kocsis ran away and headed for his home, where he held police at bay until Saturday morning.

His lawyer said Kocsis felt that he was being falsely accused of sexual assault, charges that came as a result of claims by his teenage daughter.

"He passed the polygraph test where the questions were whether or not he had engaged in criminal sexual conduct that his daughter had accused him of," Amos said.

Amos said she feels her client panicked after feeling cornered by police.

She said she still doesn't know exactly what Kocsis did to violate his bond, and as his attorney, she wasn't given any notification of new charges against him.

"If it had only been handled in a different way, that officer would not have been shot, the standoff wouldn't have taken place, and Leroi would still be here trying to clear his name," Amos said.
