Few people are more excited than Jarret Haynes to have the Democratic presidential debate hosted at the Whiting.

"Thrilled absolutely thrilled," Haynes said.

For Haynes, the executive director of the Whiting, it’s an opportunity to showcase one of Flint’s treasured assets.

"On a national and international stage we are going to able to highlight this venue that is such a jewel of the community and beloved by the community is used by the community," Haynes said.

The debate will be hosted at the 2,000-seat theater on March 6.

“It's incredibly uplifting but I also think it goes to what a community theater, what a community resource is all about,” Haynes said. “We are a gathering place for the community, whether they are gathering to see a show or gathering to listen to a political debate or gathering to talk amongst themselves – the role that the Whiting plays in this community cannot be understated.”

Until Monday, the location for the debate has been a secret for weeks, Haynes is glad he can finally talk it.

“We've got a little bit of practice of holding things under the vest,” Haynes said. “In theater it's all about the reveal, so we are used to it. We like building up to a point and then being able to announce and get that interest and get that excitement around every event that we do, certainly including this one.”
