FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Flint residents could see some relief for their water bills.

On Feb. 26 Gov. Rick Snyder announced a $30 million budget supplemental that would give Flint residents credits on their water bills.

“Flint residents should not have to pay for water they cannot drink,” Snyder said.

He continued to say the budget would go towards payments made since April 2014.

“Making the water that comes out of the tap in Flint safe to drink again is the top priority. In addition, this credit will provide some financial relief to residents who have been dealing firsthand with this issue,” Snyder said.

The bill was approved unanimously by the Legislature.

The credit is designed to be applied to water bills until Flint residents can safely use their water. Residents are still responsible for the sewer portion of their bills.

Residents who are behind on their bills will have unpaid charges and late fees dropped, Snyder’s administration said.
