SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

Five candidates are still in the running for the Republican nomination for president.

And there's just over one week until the Michigan primary.

Republican Lt. Gov. Brian Calley was in Mid-Michigan on Monday to talk about the race.

"Great for the Republican Party to see these candidates not only going after the vote but also learning about our community, our state and the needs," Calley said.

And his thoughts on front runner Donald Trump.

"I think all of the candidates still in the race are better options than Hillary Clinton," Calley said. "I would support any of the candidates that come out of that. Donald Trump certainly seems to be in a commanding position but I wouldn't count the others out either."

Analysts said, right now, Trump is the favorite to win Michigan.

Susan Demas is a political analyst out of Lansing.

"He has been leading by double digits in all the polls. And unless there is something drastic that happens with Super Tuesday, I would expect he would win the Michigan primary next week," Demas said.

She spoke to TV5 about the race and GOP debate this Thursday in Detroit.

"We've had some interesting moments in the debates, Rubio came off very strong last time. But it's very rare difficult to turn an entire race around based on one debate,” Demas said. “For Michigan residents I think there will be many interesting questions about the economy and Flint water crisis.”

Voters have expressed a huge interest in the debate this week in Detroit, for some it helps them feel more connected to the race.

“There have been 21,000 requests to attend the debate,” Calley said. “It shows you what type of excitement there is around this primary and our candidates.”
