FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Tim Johnson takes over as the head of a city's police department.

Johnson was Flint Mayor Karen Weaver's choice after she let former Chief James Tolbert go.

He said he knows he can help the city get back on the right path.

"I want to make Flint an extremely safe city again, like it used to be. And that's going to happen. That's my number one goal," Johnson said.

Johnson was retired but previously worked at both the Flint and Detroit police departments.
